The founding fathers of the society - then know as the Bristol, West of England and South Wales Permanent Building Society - held their first meeting in Bush Chambers in Corn Street in xxxx. In the early xxxx's the society embarked on a major publicity campaign aimed at encouraging individuals, rather than builders or landlords, to take out mortgages. Just to reinforce the point, in xxxx the society dropped "South Wales Permanent" from its title becoming, in xxxx, the Bristol & West Building Society. By xxxx, the Bristol & West - it had 164 branches, 1,207 employees, 348 agencies, 97,800 borrowers and an amazing 662,500 savers - was the 12th largest building society in the country.
